H.E. Alounkeo Kittikhoun, Minister to the Prime Minister’s Office, Laos’ ASEAN SOM Leader chaired the Informal ASEAN Senior Officials’ Meeting (SOM) which was held on 8-9 December 2016 in Bali, Indonesia. The ASEAN SOM Leaders exchanged views on regional and international issues, especially recent developments such as Brexit and changes in leadership in some countries, including the outcome of the U.S. 2016 Presidential Election that ASEAN and other regions have been following closely.
The Informal SOM Meeting shared the view that amidst any changing situations taking place regionally and globally, ASEAN will continue to uphold its principles, norms and values, thanks to which ASEAN has gained gradual achievements, notably the establishment of the ASEAN Community at the end of last year, ASEAN will continue to consolidate its efforts in further strengthening and prospering ASEAN Community as well as deepening and widening its economic integration for the benefits of the peoples of ASEAN Member States, and ASEAN will also further promote its unity and solidarity in addressing issues of common concern and enhance the momentum gained in its relations with all Dialogue Partners and other external partners as well as strengthen ASEAN centrality in the conduct of its external relations and in the evolving regional architecture, among others.
On this occasion, the ASEAN SOM Leaders also discussed preparations of the celebratory activities to mark the 50th Anniversary of ASEAN in 2017 at both regional and national levels and deliberated on effective implementation of the outcomes of the 28th and 29th ASEAN Summits and related Summits held in Vientiane in early September 2016.
Lao PDR’s ASEAN Chairmanship will end on 31 December 2016.
